Tile Installation Bothell

Whether it’s your forever home or a large-scale commercial project, you want the floors to last a few decades. For floors that don’t crack, wear down, fade or get scuffed, go with tile. Being affordable, attractive, low-maintenance and durable, tile is one of those materials that has very few weaknesses. If it was food, it’d be a superfood!

Durable Tile Installation Options in Bothell

So, how long does tile last? If you go with a sturdy variety and get tile installation done by certified professionals, it can last a lifetime. We mean 40-60 years easily. However, there’s a lot more to tile varieties than you’re probably aware of. Most people know that tile flooring can be either porcelain or ceramic, but in order to understand tile durability and pick a long-lasting product, you need to know what PEI ratings are.

PEI (short for Porcelain Enamel Institute) ratings go from 1-5, with 1 being ‘not very durable’, and 5 being ‘very durable’. Now, you might think tiles rated 1 are effectively useless, but that’s not the case, because this applies to tile used as a flooring material. So bathroom tile or tile used on ceilings can be rated 1 and still last decades.

For your home, a PEI rating of 2-4 is perfectly good. 2 would be best for walls and bathrooms, and 4, while overkill, would work in the living room. Generally, a PEI rating of 3 is ideal for indoor flooring and kitchen tile (countertops, i.e.). Residential tiles are usually rated 3 on the PEI scale.

You might be tempted to go for tiles rated 5, but that’s not a very good idea. Tile companies manufacture those products with a focus on durability, so they don’t usually look very attractive. A PEI rating of 5 is ideal for institutions, large businesses, and commercial places that see heavy foot traffic.

Other Ways Tile is Durable

So, tile can last a long time and withstand heavy foot traffic. You’ll be surprised to know, however, that its durability isn’t limited to these factors. We did compare it to a superfood, after all!

Waterproof

Tile is perfectly waterproof. It does not absorb moisture, so it’s perfect for the kitchen, bathroom, or balcony. After the tile installation is complete, you won’t have to worry about sealing or anything along those lines.

Stain-resistant

Your tiled floors won’t just last forever, they’ll also look good forever! Since they’re waterproof, tiles are easy to clean and resistant to staining. If they get cracked, however, staining liquids may be able to seep in. Talk to the folks at your local tile store to find the best tile for your needs.

Scratch-resistant

Tiles are tough stuff – they don’t get scratched easily. So if you live with a furry friend who scuffed-up wooden floors, you can rest assured tiles will be reasonably safe. Once again, however, make sure you talk to someone at a tile store to get a pet-friendly product.

Fadeproof

Tile does not fade over time since the color is fired straight into a tile’s clay body. Cleaning products, sunlight – nothing can leach its bright color.

Tile is also fairly resistant to extreme temperatures, smoke, chemicals, and dirt. Other materials such as wood, stone, and concrete don’t fare half as well.

These colorful designer tiles will last the test of time without losing their luster!
